Behind the Cover Story: The Player by Claire Contreras

cover story

Behind the Cover Story is a cover reveal with an exclusive guest post from the author about said cover. Maybe, it’s an explanation of how they came up with the concept. Maybe, it’s how they found their model. Maybe, it’s more than that.

I’m naturally gifted on the field and between the sheets. With flashy cars and enough media attention to put the Royal Family to shame, I’m the definition of Most Eligible Bachelor.
I’ve never met a man who doesn’t want to be me or a woman who doesn’t want to tame me. Until I meet Camila.
From the moment I lay eyes on her, I know I have to have her.
She wants to keep me at arm’s length.
I want her naked in my bed.
She thinks our worlds are too different.
All I want her to think about is screaming my name.
She says I’m bad news.
I have three weeks to prove her wrong.

~ Guest Post ~

I want to preface this by saying that I’m not a “hot guy cover” kind of girl. If you had told me three years ago that I would put a hot guy on my cover, I would have laughed. It’s not that I don’t think the eye candy is nice, but for some reason they rarely call my attention.

The process for this cover started in January and ended in August. In January I told Mia Asher about the book I was going to write next (about a European soccer player and this girl from New York who’d never watched soccer in her life). I described the guy a little and she cheered me on, as she often does, and that was that. A few days later, she sent me a message with a picture of this guy and said, “This is Warren.”

She was right.

It was SO him.

I knew from the moment I saw the photo that I had to have it, so I contacted the photographer right away. We went back and forth for months before I decided to call it quits. I told him to forget the whole thing and I tried to move on. Shortly after, I debated contacting him again. I spoke to another friend of mine (Vi Keeland) and she sort of calmed me down and walked me through the process of dealing with models/photographers (she’s quite the expert… I mean, have you seen her covers?). After thinking about it some more, I contacted him again. This time, I was prepared and things went a little smoother and after another month of going back and forth, I got my picture. Thankfully, that was the most difficult part of the process.

After I had my picture, I contacted By Hang Le. Hang made a cover for me last year for a suspense I was working on. I haven’t used that cover because I haven’t finished that book, but the cover itself is gorgeous and flawlessly captivates the story when you look at it. For that reason, when I sent her this picture for The Player, I was terrified. I expected her to take one look at it and say, “Really, Claire? I gave you the incredible cover you haven’t used and now you want me to put a hot guy on your cover?”

She didn’t do that, though. I gave her the general idea of what I wanted and waited… and waited… and finally, she sent me three options. They were good. I highly doubt Hang could make anything subpar, but they weren’t what I wanted.

I told her to change the background and make it more obvious that he was standing on a field. Then I changed the name of the book to The Player, so she had to go back and edit that, and while she was changing that I asked her to change my name from pink to green. Then, finally, after what felt like an eternity, I had the perfect cover for The Player.

Even though I am not a “hot guy cover” kind of girl, this hot guy completely fits the story, the genre, and everything I envisioned. What do you think?

Don’t forget to pickup a copy of THE PLAYER on
October 10th!!
