Behind the Cover Story: In Your Dreams by Ginger ScottIn Your Dreams by Ginger Scott

Casey Coffield has a growing list of personal flaws he keeps locked away
in his head:
He’s never on time.
His list of IOUs to his best friend is endless.
Money is always short.
Goals are never in reach.

Oh, and he’s decided to add college drop-out to that list, too. He doesn’t
really think that last one’s such a bad thing, but his family insists it
is, so it stays on the list.

On paper, he’s a zero. But in person, when he’s mixing tracks for a sea of
bodies at the hottest clubs and parties, he’s downright irresistible.
Just-right stubble on his chin, body of a boxer and a smirk that
stimulates all the right nerves—women have never been a problem. They
flock to his swagger and fall for his charm…fast.

All except for this one.

Purple hair, gray eyes, a raspy voice and sass, Murphy Sullivan is a
little bit country and a little bit rock-n-roll. And her and Casey? They
have history. He can’t remember it, but she wrote a song about him—and
it’s not exactly a love song. But it is good. Damn good. And uncovering
her inspiration just might be the key to solving a few of his
shortcomings—not to mention open doors to his own big break in the music

But sometimes dreams get messy when they collide. Sometimes life changes
patterns. A past paints the wrong picture and futures get cloudy. The only
question that remains is who will you choose when the dust settles—you? Or
the girl of your dreams?

The Story Behind the Cover
(AKA sexy smirk meet Ginger’s garage)

I’m not sure how everyone else does it, but this is my process. I freaking LOVE creating my book covers. I do my own. It’s like this little carrot I dangle and reward myself with when I’m finally done with the manuscript. (Confession: I usually cheat and start when I’m almost done with the manuscript.)

But this cover was special. Super special. And I cheated and started WAY early on this bad boy. It started when I was in the middle of working on Wicked Restless, and I had this nagging idea that I wanted to write one more Falling book. I really loved Casey’s character in The Girl I Was Before—he’s sort of a never-ending frat-boy mixed with swagger-filled DJ, and he’s that friend/side-kick that overstays his visit and maybe feels like he’s way more work than he’s worth. But…he’s also a best friend. And there was always this hint that Casey must also be a damn good guy…you know…under that super sexy but selfish exterior. And then I got to thinking about what he looks like.

Club lights. Flat-brim hats. Headphones. Vans or Chucks. Skater-boy jeans. Tight shirts and scarves. Sunglasses. Smirk. Chin.

^^^ All that above? That’s from a Post-It note I wrote that boiled Casey’s look down to a few key words. Those last two? They were circled. Casey can portray a million words in one smirk, and his chin…well, that’s his weapon. I needed a chin. Like…the freaking super hero of chins.

Meet Michael Patrick Gleason. He plays Casey. He lives here in Arizona, and his chin? Maybe just take a look at it again. It’s kinda perfect.

But even before I started assembling the pieces—aka The Chin, perfect headphones, the right hat (BTW, I made that hat. Me and the guy at LIDS are super tight now. He says I can come design there anytime I want.)—I had the most important piece to line up. I have a friend, one of those best-friend kinda friends, the kind I’ve known since I sprayed my hair straight up and rolled puffy socks up over my pegged jeans. He’s this incredibly gifted photographer, and his name is Frank Rodriguez (DLRfoto). He lives in San Francisco, but for one week, he was coming to Phoenix. The book wasn’t done yet, but stupid rules—I’m the one who made them, so I broke ’em.

We had one day, so we turned my garage into a club, complete with streaming music courtesy of Cut Chemist and color gels that gave Michael that right hint of orange and red on his skin. We shot in my one-car suburban garage for a few hours, and at one point, the husband came home to open the door, promptly closing it after staring at us with furrowed brow and telling us to “carry on.”

Hundreds of images, boiled down to a dozen choices, and this one…bam! So basically, I’ve been sitting on this beauty since Christmas. And now that you see it, I hope you understand just how dang hard it’s been to keep a lid on it and keep my mouth shut. It’s my favorite. And it’s special. And Frank is a genius. Really—go stalk him on Facebook and IG. His knack is really more of the travel/humanitarian type of thing, but I don’t know…I think he’s pretty freaking fantastic at smirks and chins and make-shift-garage sexiness. What do you think?

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the second installment in the Saints of Denver series featuring a bad girl and a by the book attorney who could be her salvation...or her ruin.

Avett Walker and Quaid Jackson’s worlds have no reason to collide. Ever. Quaid is a high powered criminal attorney as slick as he is handsome. Avett is a pink-haired troublemaker with a bad attitude and a history of picking the wrong men.

When Avett lands in a sea of hot water because of one terrible mistake, the only person who can get her out of it is the insanely sexy lawyer. The last thing on earth she wants to do is rely on the no-nonsense attorney who thinks of her as nothing more than a nuisance. He literally has her fate in his hands. Yet there is something about him that makes her want to convince him to loosen his tie and have a little fun…with her.

Quaid never takes on clients like the impulsive young woman with a Technicolor dye job. She could stand to learn a hard lesson or two, but something about her guileless hazel eyes intrigues him. Still, he’s determined to keep their relationship strictly business. But doing so is becoming more impossible with each day he spends with her.

As they work side-by-side, they’ll have to figure out a way to get along and keep their hands off each other—because the chemistry between them is beyond charged.

To pop our cherry on this feature, we asked Jay Crownover to tell us if she was a pain in the ass to her publisher, while coming up with the cover of Charged. We already knew the answer, but we asked anyway. Charged is the second book in her Saints of Denver series, the follow up to Built and a spin off of the Marked Men. If you have not checked out Built yet, you should!

~ Jay’s Response ~

I’m always a pain in the ass you should know this!
My covers are always a little bit of “this is what I want” vs “this is what I get”.
It’s hard when you write men and woman with distinctive tattoos and other traits.
Most of the time we compromise and get pretty close to where I want to be…sometimes we end up on the other side of the road but the money has been spent and ultimately the publisher is paying the bill so I get left in the dust. Out of 13+ books that’s only happened twice so I consider myself pretty lucky, and for the most part I love my covers.

With CHARGED I more than love it. I think it’s perfect and sexy and everything I could ask for considering it’s my first couple cover.

I wanted to move away from the single guy(not that I won’t go back to that) on the cover for a few reasons. This series is different, it’s more about the central couple than the Marked Men was and it’s also much more contemporary. This book in particular also has a female lead that is dynamic and kind of a showstopper. I knew there was no way I couldn’t feature her and her pink hair on the cover. Everyone in production that read the book agreed. Plus she might even be sexier than Quaid!

It’s hard to find good looking blonde dude…really hard! My editor Amanda actually found this image and the guy was SO very much Quaid I told them to do whatever they had to in order to make the girl resemble Avett because I just loved him so much…he even looks a little older than the girl which is perfect. In the right hands Photoshop really is magical and amazing.

So there ya have it…all my meandering and spazzing to get the perfect cover!

About Jay Crownover

I’m supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I’m an natural redhead even though I haven’t seen my real hair color in years, I’m a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I’ve been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that.
I love to write, love to read and all I’m interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.
Thanks for taking the time to check my stuff out….
