Behind the Cover Story: You’re the Only One by E.M. Abel

by E.M. Abel

Behind the Cover Story is a cover reveal with an exclusive guest post from the author about said cover. Maybe, it’s an explanation of how they came up with the concept. Maybe, it’s how they found their model. Maybe, it’s more than that.

Together they move to New York to pursue their passions. Dillon is a singer/songwriter looking for his big break while Sky wants nothing more than to become a top fashion designer.

Choosing the covers for my books is one of my favorite parts of the publishing process. I love art so the challenge of portraying a story and evoking feelings through images is a lot of fun for me. In the past I’ve even taken the photos for my covers. (My Breaking Free Series) This time I found some good stock photos and sent them off to my friend and cover designer, Renee Ericson from Re Creatives. I told her a little about the plot of my book and she came up with the perfect design.

Music plays a really large role in this story since Dillon is a singer/songwriter so, it made total sense to have a guitar on the cover. I also loved the representation of Sky. I like that her back is exposed and she appears vulnerable because Dillon is the only person that truly knows that side of her. The moment I saw this I knew it was the perfect cover for You’re the Only One.

You’re the Only One release April 11, 2017 – Add it on Goodreads >HERE<

Behind the Cover Story: Black Hearts (Sins Duet #1) by Karina Halle

Behind the Cover Story is a cover reveal with an exclusive guest post from the author about said cover. Maybe, it’s an explanation of how they came up with the concept. Maybe, it’s how they found their model. Maybe, it’s more than that.

For Vicente Bernal, truth is all he’s known. The son of an infamous drug lord, Vicente was born to help run the family business, which means he’s been raised on a throne of sordid pasts and dirty laundry, violence and pride. But when Vicente stumbles across someone he’s not supposed to know about – a woman from his father’s checkered past – he sets out to California to find her behind his father’s back.

What Vicente doesn’t expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman’s twenty-year old daughter. Beautiful and edgy with a vulnerability he can’t resist, Violet tempts Vicente from afar and though he promised himself he’d stay away from her, curiosity and lust are powerful forces. Besides, Vicente has always gotten everything he wants – why shouldn’t he have Violet too?

Soon his wants turn into an obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.

But it’s a love with tragic consequences.

Both the truth – and the lies – not only threaten to tear them apart, but threaten their very lives.

Someone has to pay for the sins of the fathers.

And they’ll be paying the price with their souls.

Vicente is Hispanic, so thus began the search for finding a suitable model. If I couldn’t find a hispanic model, then I at least wanted one who could pass for one. Our first round, searching through the files of Wander Aguilar Photography (who has provided handsome men for three upcoming books of mine already), we came across a lovely man who fit Vicente perfectly but alas the image was sold and we couldn’t use it.

But we didn’t give up. We spent the day searching and searching for the perfect Vicente.

Finally we found him. The photo wasn’t quite right but I saw the potential right away. Plus he was smoking a cigarette and even though it’s something I don’t condone, it fit Vicente’s character perfectly (who also smokes…and does a lot of bad things).

Of course he wasn’t perfect yet and through the magic of Hang Le, she fixed some things about him (instant plastic surgery!) and ta-da, we have Vicente Bernal, right down to those memorable eyes and heated gaze.

Next month we’ll have the cover for Dirty Souls, the sequel in this duet, and I bet the process will be a lot easier. We’re looking for a female to represent Violet McQueen, the other half of this dynamic duo. And pretty women are always easier to find than hot men (in my opinion anyway – I don’t want a shirtless guy, I want a handsome face to fall in love with).

And boy, have I fallen in love with Vicente Bernal.

Black Hearts releases February 19th.

Resisting an irresistible force wears you down and turns you out.
I know.
I’ve been doing it for years.
I may not have a musical gift of my own, but I’ve got a nose for talent and an eye for the extraordinary.
And Marlon James – Grip to his fans – is nothing short of extraordinary.
Years ago, we strung together a few magical nights, but I keep those memories in a locked drawer and I’ve thrown away the key.
All that’s left is friendship and work.
He’s on the verge of unimaginable fame, all his dreams poised to come true.
I manage his career, but I can’t seem to manage my heart.
It’s wild, reckless, disobedient.
And it remembers all the things I want to forget.

If I could undo your kisses
If I could un-feel your touch
If I could unhook this heart from yours
I would
But I’m trapped in the memory of what we were
Stuck with the reality of what we are
Tempted by the promise of a future
Afraid of possibility
I don’t know how our story ends, but this – this is where it started.

“You are the perfect verse over a tight beat.” – Brown Sugar

My black-hearted beauties!!! Thank you so much for sharing the covers of GRIP, and its prequel FLOW! To talk about what was behind the cover, I really have to talk at least a little about what is behind the story itself. The quote above from one of my favorite movies, BROWN SUGAR, rang in my head a lot as I was writing. GRIP is a love story about two people from completely different walks of life, from completely different circumstances, who meet each other and feel like they’ve known one another forever. They just click. It’s not insta-love. It’s anything BUT. FLOW, the prequel, actually takes place 8 years before GRIP. At that point, Grip is just starting in music and Bristol is a sophomore at Columbia. They connect around conversation and opinions and music and a lot of the things that typically come up when you first meet someone. And also around a lot of things that typically don’t. It’s not the things they have in common that fascinate them. It’s the ways they’re different. An innate curiosity drives both Marlon James (Grip) and Bristol Gray, and I think that is what makes them work. They don’t allow their differences to keep them apart, but leverage those differences to understand each other.

Hip hop is like a secondary character in this book. If you don’t like hip hop, you’ll still “get” this book; I hope still love it because it’s ultimately a deeply romantic story. But if you DO love hip hop, you’ll enjoy hearing names like Kendrick Lamar, Tupac, Biggie, Jay Z. Grip is a hip hop artist, and later on Bristol is his manager. But he, like Tupac, attended a School of the Arts. And like Tupac, started as a poet, a writer. He’s very broad-minded. Very well read, articulate, but authentic. Still really grounded in the community where he grew up, even as his star rises. He, like Kendrick Lamar, grew up in Compton, and has to reconcile the sometimes disparate experiences of that setting and the very cultured context of his arts education. He’s been grinding for years – writing and producing for other artists, putting out underground mix tapes, featuring on artists’ tracks – and now it’s HIS turn. He’s about to drop his first solo studio album. All of that goes into the concept behind the cover.

Grip is hot. So I did want some “body” shot, but the story is very layered with a complex plot and a lot of “real life” current issues raised. So I wanted to elevate a little above “just” abs. Nothing wrong with abs! LOL! But with hip hop being such an influence I also wanted to integrate the cityscape; an urban/big city tone. And diverse characters are important in my work. Every book I’ve ever written features a cast of multi-ethnic characters. I wanted this visual to be…anything when you look at him. Is he Black, his he Hispanic, white? Diversity and embracing/understanding our differences actually is one of the main themes of the book, and their relationship – how they are so different, but manage to listen to, respect and ultimately love one another – becomes a metaphor for one of the book’s broader themes. So I wanted the aesthetic to be almost race-neutral.

The FLOW cover has a bit of a younger vibe than GRIP because they are younger in the prequel. They’re college-age In FLOW, so they don’t have the same responsibilities yet, and the beach and the Ferris wheel communicate some of that. GRIP takes place when they’re about to turn 30, and their lives have become really complex, especially with Grip’s celebrity, so it has a more mature context.

I hope you enjoy BOTH books! FLOW will be FREE everywhere on Feb 25!!! And GRIP goes straight to KU on March 2!

About Kennedy Ryan

Kennedy Ryan grew up in North Carolina, but loves living in Atlanta with her husband (tall – check, dark – check – handsome – check), and her handful of a son. Though she knew, like writers often do, that she was supposed to tell stories, the road to fulfillment has been paved with “some of everything” jobs that kept her family eating and living indoors. With her degree in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Tar Heels!), she has focused on writing for non-profit organizations and even doing some non-fiction ghost writing. Only in the last few years did she start telling stories again.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mom, she’s also passionate about serving families living with Autism. Her son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of two, and she has made it her mission to help as many families as possible find the resources and services they need.

I am just as passionate about the REAL LIFE stories I tell as I am about the worlds I build in fiction. Some of these use my given TINA DULA and some are written under my pseudonym KENNEDY RYAN.

Behind the Cover Story: Rocked Up by Karina Halle & Scott Mackenzie

Behind the Cover Story is a cover reveal with an exclusive guest post from the author about said cover. Maybe, it’s an explanation of how they came up with the concept. Maybe, it’s how they found their model. Maybe, it’s more than that.

Rocked Up is a STANDALONE rockstar romantic comedy and the fun and sexy brainchild of New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle and her husband Scott Mackenzie.

I have been watching him since I was a child.

He didn’t notice me back then and it didn’t matter. Brad Snyder, guitarist and singer for one of the world’s greatest bands, was my entire life.

My father, the CEO of Ramsey Records, takes credit for all of Brad’s success, trying to control him in the same way he’s controlled me.

But I finally get an opportunity to prove myself.

To be wild.

To be free.

Today I’m auditioning to be the replacement bass player for Brad’s band. If I get the job, I’ll go on tour and work with Brad every day, in very close proximity.

There’s only one rule: he’s not allowed to touch the boss’s daughter.

Remember when I said that Brad never used to notice little ol’ me?

Well, Brad’s noticing me now.

In a way that’s going to get us both in trouble.

My name is Lael Ramsey and we all know how this will turn out.

Cover designer extraordinaire Hang Le and I have been working together for a long time. I think the first work she did for me were logos for The Artists Trilogy back in 2013! I’m talking old school.

This cover wasn’t that different from any of the others. It usually involves me contacting Hang with my next book, telling her my feelings about the cover and what the book is about and then she runs with it. She always reads my mind and if she doesn’t, it’s a much better version of what I envisioned.

For Rocked Up she surprised me. I mean, how hot is this guy on the cover? Where did she find this perfect sexy specimen? He was the perfect Brad Synder (the rockstar hero in the book)…not only that but it’s also classy and fun at the same time. Nothing wrong with a shirtless guy, but since I wrote this book with my husband, we wanted a cover he could be proud of. And there’s the fact that most of my covers in the past don’t have a man on it, so I wanted some kind of happy medium. I think this cover both showcases a sexy guy while still retaining a lot of mystery.

And of course there’s Hang’s fun touch with the pregnancy test logo! Yes, the book does contain the trope of an accidental pregnancy so it ties it all in and lets the reader know they are in for a read!

Behind the Cover Story: The Player by Claire Contreras

I’m naturally gifted on the field and between the sheets. With flashy cars and enough media attention to put the Royal Family to shame, I’m the definition of Most Eligible Bachelor.

I’ve never met a man who doesn’t want to be me or a woman who doesn’t want to tame me. Until I meet Camila.

From the moment I lay eyes on her, I know I have to have her.

She wants to keep me at arm’s length.
I want her naked in my bed.

She thinks our worlds are too different.
All I want her to think about is screaming my name.

She says I’m bad news.

I have three weeks to prove her wrong.

~ Guest Post ~

I want to preface this by saying that I’m not a “hot guy cover” kind of girl. If you had told me three years ago that I would put a hot guy on my cover, I would have laughed. It’s not that I don’t think the eye candy is nice, but for some reason they rarely call my attention.

The process for this cover started in January and ended in August. In January I told Mia Asher about the book I was going to write next (about a European soccer player and this girl from New York who’d never watched soccer in her life). I described the guy a little and she cheered me on, as she often does, and that was that. A few days later, she sent me a message with a picture of this guy and said, “This is Warren.”

She was right.

It was SO him.

I knew from the moment I saw the photo that I had to have it, so I contacted the photographer right away. We went back and forth for months before I decided to call it quits. I told him to forget the whole thing and I tried to move on. Shortly after, I debated contacting him again. I spoke to another friend of mine (Vi Keeland) and she sort of calmed me down and walked me through the process of dealing with models/photographers (she’s quite the expert… I mean, have you seen her covers?). After thinking about it some more, I contacted him again. This time, I was prepared and things went a little smoother and after another month of going back and forth, I got my picture. Thankfully, that was the most difficult part of the process.

After I had my picture, I contacted By Hang Le. Hang made a cover for me last year for a suspense I was working on. I haven’t used that cover because I haven’t finished that book, but the cover itself is gorgeous and flawlessly captivates the story when you look at it. For that reason, when I sent her this picture for The Player, I was terrified. I expected her to take one look at it and say, “Really, Claire? I gave you the incredible cover you haven’t used and now you want me to put a hot guy on your cover?”

She didn’t do that, though. I gave her the general idea of what I wanted and waited… and waited… and finally, she sent me three options. They were good. I highly doubt Hang could make anything subpar, but they weren’t what I wanted.

I told her to change the background and make it more obvious that he was standing on a field. Then I changed the name of the book to The Player, so she had to go back and edit that, and while she was changing that I asked her to change my name from pink to green. Then, finally, after what felt like an eternity, I had the perfect cover for The Player.

Even though I am not a “hot guy cover” kind of girl, this hot guy completely fits the story, the genre, and everything I envisioned. What do you think?

Don’t forget to pickup a copy of THE PLAYER on
October 10th!!

Behind the Cover Story ~ Reveal: The Silent Waters by Brittainy C. Cherry

Behind the Cover Story ~ Reveal: The Silent Waters by Brittainy C. CherryThe Silent Waters by Brittainy C. Cherry
Series: Elements #3
September 23rd, 2016
Genres: Contemporary Romance

Moments.

Our lives are a collection of moments. Some utterly painful and full of yesterday's hurts. Some beautifully hopeful and full of tomorrow's promises.

I’ve had many moments in my lifetime, moments that changed me, challenged me. Moments that scared me and engulfed me. However, the biggest ones—the most heartbreaking and breathtaking ones—all included him.

I was eight years old when I lost my voice. A piece of me was stolen away, and the only person who could truly hear my silence was Brooks Griffin. He was the light during my dark days, the promise of tomorrow, until tragedy found him. Tragedy that eventually drowned him in a sea of memories.

This is the story of a boy and girl who loved each other, but didn’t love themselves. A story of life and death. Of love and broken promises.

Of moments.

Can we take a second and appreciate the beauty of this cover?!

If you have seen the previous two covers really you can’t expect anything less than this magnificent looking beauty.

So I (Tiffany) met Brittainy in Vegas recently and let me tell you… She literally became my favorite person!  Let’s just say she’s this poetic gangster and so full of positive energy, her smiles are contagious.  We have a first look at her cover and a little insight. Enjoy!

What was the thought process behind your cover or the inspiration for it?

Brittainy: For the cover of The Silent Waters I definitely wanted it to have the same feel as the first two books in the series, yet also somehow tie in the despair of the hero with the photo! When I stumbled on the cover model on Instagram I knew he was going to be on my cover! He just embodies everything that is Brooks.

I love that! Is there anything specific you want readers to know about this book? Also can this be read as a standalone?

Brittainy: I’d love readers to know that this is a story about two people and the moments that broke them, and the moments in life that healed them. It’s a story of moments. It can be read as a complete standalone!

See I told you, she’s like a modern Edgar Allan Poe, like I don’t think I have ever loved the word MOMENTS so much!

Once more lets totally admire this full wrap cover, because well it gorgeous!

Everyone make sure to add this beauty to you TBR! We can’t wait for it!
