Never in a million years would I have pictured myself as an axe-wielding, dragon lady, chopping up multi-colored flannel shirts into my very own plaid mulch. But here I am, chopping away my frustrations.

It all started when my brother, Paul, convinced me to go on one last family road trip across the Mother Road with him and my dad.. Just like old times, right? Wrong. What Paul fails to mention is his best man, Porter, will be joining us, who just so happens to be my childhood crush and the man who broke my heart four years ago.

What is supposed to be a fun, family bonding experience across Route 66 turns into a war of pranks, awkward moments and bathrooms full of dirty flannel shirts and day old beard clippings. Paul’s know-it-all attitude and Porter’s devilish charm brings me to the brink of my sanity on my seven day trek across the United States with three bearded men in a small 1980’s RV.

Today, I’m mixing my review for The Mother Road with  a Makeup Monday post because the main character happens to be a beauty blogger. Kind of a no brainer, you know!

The Review

The Mother Road is not my typical go to book.  I very rarely will reach for a fluffy or humorous story, I lean towards more damaged and dark stories. However, the cover caught my eye and then the blurb hints at a second chance romance and I knew I wanted to give it a shot.

Marley started crushing on her brother’s best friend (Porter) at an early age.  She finally gets that perfect date with him the night of her Senior prom but instead of ending in magic and roses, it ends in heartache.  Four years later, she’s had no contact with Porter. No explanation, no apologies, nothing.   But with her brother’s impending wedding and one last family road trip to take – a run in with Porter is inevitable.  Though she wasn’t expecting him to be tagging along on this week long, cross country trip.

This family is hilarious.  Marley is a feisty little spitball who takes no shit.  Paul is ridiculously dramatic and girly, to the point where if he were my brother – I’d ask him to drop trow just to ensure there wasn’t a vagina hiding in there.  Bernie, the dad, is the kind of dad everyone should hope for.  He just rolls with everything.  Let’s his kids work out their shit, even eggs them on when it’s needed.  They are constantly pranking or one-upping each other. While some of the antics felt over the top for me, I found myself laughing out loud quite often.

But the meat of the story isn’t all fun and games.  There is the bigger story line of the undeniable connection and attraction between Marley and Porter.  They obviously love each other but life has thrown them in two separate directions.  Porter’s need to not hold Marley back in any way was pretty sweet and adorable, even if misguided at times.  I could understand his apprehension as well as feel sympathetic to Marley’s confusion in regards to his actions.

The smaller story line adds a needed tenderness to the story as a whole.  This road trip is all about healing, goodbyes and new beginnings. I had tons of emotions while reading this one! Nothing that tore my soul out and stomped on it but plenty of heart felt moments mixed in with all the funny!

Overall, The Mother Road is a super fun read with a sweet romance that will leave you completely satisfied!

About Meghan Quinn

When I was in high school I occasionally read books but was consumed by other teenage things so I didn’t take the time to appreciate a good book on a cloudy day, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. It wasn’t until I received a Kindle for Christmas one year that my world completely flipped upside down. When looking for books I came across the Contemporary Romance genre and was sold and I haven’t turned back since.

You can either find my head buried in my Kindle, listening to inspiring heart ripping music or typing away on the computer twisting and turning the lives of my characters while driving my readers crazy with anticipation.

I currently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs where the sun is always shining and there is a trail waiting to be hiked on every corner. I share a lovely and warm home with the love of my life and my five, four-legged children

This week we are featuring one of Debbie’s most anticipated reads for December and the first book in the spin-off series of the wildly popular Black Dagger Brotherhood. If you’re a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood then you’ll understand the anticipation for this book.

Blood Kiss

Black Dagger Legacy #1
J.R. Ward

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated–and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

BLOOD KISS is the first book in this series and will be released on December 1. Here’s what J.R. Ward has to say about her new series (source):

…where the BDB training center is reopened to a new cast of recruits, and THE ORIGINAL BROTHERS teach these FNUGs wassup. In the process of the new recruits falling in love and getting into a sh*t ton of trouble, THE ORIGINAL BROTHERS could be shown with their shellans, their Brothers, their people in the mansion, in a more prominent way than I’m able to do in the BDB books.

Paperback, yo. Not hardcover. Traditional PNR, just like DARK LOVER was in the old days.

Sex. Lot of sex.

As in, you might need your BBQ tongs. Maybe a flame retardant suit.

Maybe a fire truck on standby out in your front yard.

So… we have the first of the Black Dagger Legacy books, BLOOD KISS, coming out this December.

Now, let me say this: the ORIGINAL BROTHERS are still going to show up in the BDB books. Hell, yeah! And from time to time, a BDB book is going to be about them and their mate if there’s a big thing going on in their lives (think THE KING.) I am NOT taking a step away from the Brothers at all- if anything, I’m bringing them further to the forefront with the Black Dagger Legacy books.

But I miss my boys 🙁 I want to show you where they’re at. I want to take you back to them- in their new roles as… well, role models and teachers.

The Pretties

Because a vampy lip is so synonymous with fall, we felt it was only proper to introduce you to Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Nosferatu and Vampira. These long wearing, full-coverage liquid lipsticks with a smooth, matte finish is perfect if you want to rock that vampy look this season.

KVD - Vampy Lips

Nosferatu is a beautiful blood-crimson color that screams “Blood Kiss” while Vampira is a deep reddish burgundy that will have you looking a vampirette.

The formula for these liquid lipsticks is quite fluid, so it may take a bit of practice if you aren’t experienced with such formulas, but once you have your technique down, these lipsticks are easy to use.  We do suggest applying two coats of these liquid lipsticks for better coverage and color pay off.

With a simple, sparkly or smokey eye look, Nosferatu and Vampira are two vampy lip options you can totally rock this fall.

We are giving away a Kindle or Paperback of BLOOD KISS (Winner’s Choice).
Open Internationally. Ends 11/30.

I’m in trouble. Again. And instead of facing my problems head-on, I’ve run away. Far away this time, and no one can catch me—not my two younger sisters, Violet and Rose, not my father, my grandmother, or that witch Pilar who wants to take control of my family’s cosmetics company. Now I’m in Hawaii, enjoying the sun and sand and water, where nobody knows the hot mess known as Lily Fowler. And I’m loving every minute of it.

But someone is watching me. Following me. He’s gorgeous. Soon we’re talking, and against all my instincts, I reveal bits and pieces of myself to Max. It feels good, though I know he can’t be the man for me. These sudden feelings we share are way too complicated, too fraught, too intense.

Then everything explodes and I’m forced to return home. My intentions have always been true, but now everyone’s mad at me. I don’t know who to turn to anymore . . . except to Max. He’s the one I want to trust. But I’m not so sure I should. Maybe it’s worth the risk—what-ifs be damned. . . .

Romance + Cosmetics = Awesome

I’ve always had a thing for makeup. I remember having my first part time job in high school and spending what little money I made (and it was little) on makeup I found at the local drugstore or Target. I read fashion magazines like they were going out of style. I devoured them actually and thought I wanted a job in the fashion world. That was one of my dreams and I kept up on trends, reading those magazines for years (Vogue was my bible!).Alas, a career in the fashion industry never happened. But what happened is the next best thing because instead of working in the fashion world, I can write about it instead! How fun is that?
So it was sort of natural to me to want to create a series revolving around a cosmetics business. Part of my research was reading a book about Estee Lauder (what a powerhouse she was). She became the inspiration behind the woman who started Fleur Cosmetics, Dahlia Fowler, in my Fowler Sisters series (OWNING VIOLET, STEALING ROSE and TAMING LILY).
Right around the time I was writing OWNING VIOLET I discovered MAC Cosmetics created a new makeup line called A Novel Romance. Their advertising for the collection features images of beautiful models posing for mock romance covers, their poses looking as if they’re in the throes of passion, though their makeup is always impeccable (even the guy’s LOL).
(The one pirate looking dude can wear a smoky eye like nobody’s business, I might add.)
The names are fabulous, all with a romance theme. Haute and Naughty mascara. Reckless Desire lipgloss. Lingering Kiss lipstick. Love Power eye shadow. If my girls from Fleur Cosmetics could’ve come up with a line featuring cosmetics with romance novel-themed names, they would’ve done it! MAC beat them to the punch.
I hope you check out the last book in the Fowler Sisters series TAMING LILY, which is out July 7th.
Most of the cosmetics from the MAC collection aren’t available any longer (I think they’re really only up on eBay now) but lucky for you I have some pieces from the collection and I’m doing a giveaway of them here!

Makeup Monday #5: Debbie’s Top 5 Drugstore Makeup

Makeup Monday is a weekly feature on Black Heart Reviews where we combine two of our favorites things: books and makeup! Hope you enjoy, and feel free to join in by posting your makeup regiment or beauty products on Monday via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #MakeupMonday!

We don’t actually have a book to feature with this week’s #MakeupMonday post. I wanted to talk to you guys about some of my favorite drugstore makeup products. While I do love to shop at Sephora, and basically give them all my monies, I do love going to my local drugstore for a few favorite/must have makeup products. You don’t always have to spend an arm and a leg for great makeup products and I’m here to show you my top 5 drugstore makeup….

Debbie Top 5 Drugstore Makeup

1. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment Concealer
I don’t even know how long I’ve been using this product (it’s been a few years), but it’s definitely one makeup product that I use daily. Even when I’m using all high end products, I always end up using this concealer. I’m lucky that I don’t have very dark circles, but this concentrated and pigmented liquid concealer helps erase any appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and brightens my under eye area.

Favorite Color: Honey

2. Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal 24 Hour Cream Gel Eyeshadow
I love these cream gel eyeshadows from Maybelline! They come in a beautiful array of matte and metallic colors. I discovered them a few years ago and have been a fan ever since. You can use them on their own or layer is under you powder eye shadow to intensify the colors and has a long-lasting effect.

Favorite Color: Tough as Taupe, Bad to the Bronze

3. Milani Baked Blush
If you want to give your cheeks a nice healthy glow, then you need to get you some Milani Baked Blushes. These blushes are soft, have great pigmentation and are so easy to blend. The color Luminoso is my ride or die blush, and it ranks right up there with my high-end blushes. Luminoso is actually fairly similar to NARS Orgasm but without the hefty price tag. If you want to give your cheeks that sun-kissed glow this spring and summer, then you needs some Luminoso in your life

Favorite Color: Luminoso, Rose D’Oro

4. Revlon ColorBurst Balm Stain/Matte Balm
These balm stains give my lips life. They are my go to lip product on a day-to-day basis. I usually have one or two stashed in my purse, one in my car, and one stored in my desk at work. The balm stain looks so natural on the lips and gives it a nice stain of color. The color payoff for the matte balms is great and the velvet matte formula doesn’t dry out my lips.

Favorite Color: Honey, Adore, Sultry (Matte), Standout (Matte)

5. CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara
While I have a few holy grail high-end mascaras in my makeup collection, some of my all-time favorite mascaras actually come from the drugstore. CoverGirl’s LashBlast Volume Mascara has been an ultimate favorite of mine for a few years and I usually end up picking this mascara over some of my favorite high-end mascaras. It’s s long-lasting, provides a lot of volume, and it does not clump.

Favorite Color: Very Black (Waterproof)

What are some of your favorite drugstore makeup products?
Let us know in the comments below.

Pepper Ryan grew up the troublesome, spoiled child of a rock god. With her less-than-stellar parentage, and the bipolar disorder that has plagued her existence, to say this little firecracker is a handful would be the understatement of the century.

Sammy Belle spent more than half his life saving Pepper. He’d been her strength, her sanity, and the protective brotherly figure she never wanted to have.

They were never meant to be together.

They gave in anyway.

And just when Sammy thought he had everything he wanted, Pepper ran.

Now twenty-three, Pepper returns to Sugartown, a failed tattoo artist with one too many screws loose who’s down on her luck, wielding an ice cream van as beaten up as her heart.

Sugartown’s most coveted bachelor has always been content with the quiet life he leads until Pepper, the hellion from his past, returns to test his strength, his patience, and perhaps even his sanity. But two can play at that game, and Pepper is about to learn that Sam can give as good as he gets.

Can this good country boy survive Pepper’s cruel city world, or will the whole thing be put down to a bout of temporary insanity?

One thing is for certain:

He’s crazy about her.

She’s just crazy.

The Pretties

Remember the temporary tattoos you’d get in the Cracker Jack boxes as a kid? Those were always my favorite, I never cared if it was the pirate or the butterfly – I just wanted the damn tattoo! Now that I’m all growed up, I’ve had some real ink applied but it’s an addictive process and I always want more. Well, now I have a way to temporarily satisfy my need for new body art with out the pesky waiting or the expensive price tag.

Flash Tattoos has created a line of jewelry inspired temporary tattoos. They apply just like the ones from the cracker jack boxes – apply the cut out image to your skin, apply a wet compress for a few minutes and peel away! Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

In Now Leaving Sugartown, Pepper spends time both as a tattoo artist and as a henna artist – reminding me of these little lovelies.

The Pretties

A few years ago, while I was cleaning out my vanity, I realized just how unorganized and cluttered my eyeshadow collection had become. I had a ton of their single eyeshadows thrown in drawers and it was difficult to find one particular color when it was lost in a sea of 50+ eyeshadow pots.

Single Shadows

I needed to find a way to safely store them but also keep them organized to where it was easy for me to find a certain eyeshadow when I needed it. Basically, I needed something that would simplify, and organize my makeup, and get rid of all the bulky packaging most of my shadows came in. After doing a bit of Googling and research, I came upon Z Palettes.

Large and Medium Z Palette

Z Palettes are empty magnetic makeup palettes with a clear window that can hold all of your favorite makeup in one easy place. You can place any brand of products in the Z Palette to create your own kaleidoscope of eyeshadows, blushes, bronzers or powders.

Z Palettes make it so much easier for me to see all of my MAC single shadows in an easy convenient place. I’ve been able to get rid of those bulky and pesky packaging from Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows collection, and make it easy for me to create palettes of different products for when I’m trying to same space in my travel makeup bag.

Large and Medium Z Palette - Open

Z Palettes come in an array of colors and sizes that will fit any of your favorite makeup products. Whether you want to organize, customize or simplify your makeup collection, Z Palettes are definitely the way to go!
