Never in a million years would I have pictured myself as an axe-wielding, dragon lady, chopping up multi-colored flannel shirts into my very own plaid mulch. But here I am, chopping away my frustrations.

It all started when my brother, Paul, convinced me to go on one last family road trip across the Mother Road with him and my dad.. Just like old times, right? Wrong. What Paul fails to mention is his best man, Porter, will be joining us, who just so happens to be my childhood crush and the man who broke my heart four years ago.

What is supposed to be a fun, family bonding experience across Route 66 turns into a war of pranks, awkward moments and bathrooms full of dirty flannel shirts and day old beard clippings. Paul’s know-it-all attitude and Porter’s devilish charm brings me to the brink of my sanity on my seven day trek across the United States with three bearded men in a small 1980’s RV.

Makeup Monday is a weekly feature on Black Heart Reviews where we combine two of our favorites things: books and makeup! Hope you enjoy, and feel free to join in by posting your makeup regiment or beauty products on Monday via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #MakeupMonday!

Today, I’m mixing my review for The Mother Road with  a Makeup Monday post because the main character happens to be a beauty blogger. Kind of a no brainer, you know!

The Review

The Mother Road is not my typical go to book.  I very rarely will reach for a fluffy or humorous story, I lean towards more damaged and dark stories. However, the cover caught my eye and then the blurb hints at a second chance romance and I knew I wanted to give it a shot.

SO GLAD I DID!

Marley started crushing on her brother’s best friend (Porter) at an early age.  She finally gets that perfect date with him the night of her Senior prom but instead of ending in magic and roses, it ends in heartache.  Four years later, she’s had no contact with Porter. No explanation, no apologies, nothing.   But with her brother’s impending wedding and one last family road trip to take – a run in with Porter is inevitable.  Though she wasn’t expecting him to be tagging along on this week long, cross country trip.

This family is hilarious.  Marley is a feisty little spitball who takes no shit.  Paul is ridiculously dramatic and girly, to the point where if he were my brother – I’d ask him to drop trow just to ensure there wasn’t a vagina hiding in there.  Bernie, the dad, is the kind of dad everyone should hope for.  He just rolls with everything.  Let’s his kids work out their shit, even eggs them on when it’s needed.  They are constantly pranking or one-upping each other. While some of the antics felt over the top for me, I found myself laughing out loud quite often.

But the meat of the story isn’t all fun and games.  There is the bigger story line of the undeniable connection and attraction between Marley and Porter.  They obviously love each other but life has thrown them in two separate directions.  Porter’s need to not hold Marley back in any way was pretty sweet and adorable, even if misguided at times.  I could understand his apprehension as well as feel sympathetic to Marley’s confusion in regards to his actions.

The smaller story line adds a needed tenderness to the story as a whole.  This road trip is all about healing, goodbyes and new beginnings. I had tons of emotions while reading this one! Nothing that tore my soul out and stomped on it but plenty of heart felt moments mixed in with all the funny!

Overall, The Mother Road is a super fun read with a sweet romance that will leave you completely satisfied!

The Pretties

As I said, Marley is a beauty blogger and at one point in the book there is some discussion about a new Man Soap.  So we’re giving away some fancy Manly Man soap as well as a tin of Road Trip soap.  Both are made by Seattle Sundries with all natural ingredients.

Seattle Sundries message: We take pride in creating unique, handmade bath and skincare products using only natural oils, butters, botanicals, clays and 100% essential oils. All of our artisan soaps are made in small batches and cut by hand, with great attention to detail and quality. We also offer traditional shaving soaps, natural lip balms, and solid lotion bars. Our many happy customers value how Seattle Sundries makes modern products with vintage flair and classic quality. Give ‘em a try and you’ll see why!

They smell amazing and I think Marley would approve. 😉

About Meghan Quinn

When I was in high school I occasionally read books but was consumed by other teenage things so I didn’t take the time to appreciate a good book on a cloudy day, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. It wasn’t until I received a Kindle for Christmas one year that my world completely flipped upside down. When looking for books I came across the Contemporary Romance genre and was sold and I haven’t turned back since.

You can either find my head buried in my Kindle, listening to inspiring heart ripping music or typing away on the computer twisting and turning the lives of my characters while driving my readers crazy with anticipation.

I currently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs where the sun is always shining and there is a trail waiting to be hiked on every corner. I share a lovely and warm home with the love of my life and my five, four-legged children
